Chia Seeds. Excellent Nutrition and Long Storage.
I just bought some Chia seeds from http://www.arizonachia.com
You may have seen them sold a Salba seeds. Salba are white and Chia are black. Nutrients are essential the same, amazingly good! The seeds are said to store for 5 years if not ground. Also, The Magic of Chia: Revival of an Ancient Wonder Food, by James F. Scheer Many studies showing these seeds to have truly wonderful nutritional properties. A complete protein, with all essential amino acids. Loaded with essential fatty acids. Oils and fat are always an issue with storage. This looks to be part of the solution for us. The seeds are rich in flavanols, minerals, and many other vitamins. We've made whole grain muffins and added the Salba. Also, added a ground tablespoon to my morning smoothie. Easy to use in a variety of ways, as they are mild in taste. |
Re: Chia Seeds. Excellent Nutrition and Long Storage.
That looks great nutritionally, but the 1 1/2 lb bags sound small and pricey. 20 bucks plus 5 shipping for 1 1/2 lbs seeds.
If I find a better source, I'll post it plus I'll try the local co-op. |
Re: Chia Seeds. Excellent Nutrition and Long Storage.
PLEASE let me know if you find a better price. The seeds, when sold as Salba, are usually $25-29 a lb. That's why this site is good, selling Chia (really the same as salba) for about half.
A natural doctor whose newsletter I subscribe to, Dr. Robert Rowen, did the homework on this and says he can't find a cheaper price. Let me know, Conk |

Thanks for letting me know a better bulk price was unlikely. The omega fats in a good tasting seed is great!

Thanks SF! Good find.
You do not want to eat these seeds without grinding them. They will stick in your teeth for days. ;) Just grind them up and add to whatever. Bake with them or stir in a blended drink. Don't let the drink sit very long or it will turn to gel. |
